Why North Shore Trees Need Different Care
The Shore sits between two coasts, and it shows in the trees. Salt-laden wind, thin coastal soils and decades-old shelter planting all create problems you see far less of inland.

Salt wind and exposure
Anything on an exposed face from Devonport up through the East Coast Bays takes constant salt-laden wind. It burns foliage on the seaward side, pushes growth inland and leaves trees lopsided and top-heavy — which is exactly what fails in a storm.

Protected coastal natives
Pōhutukawa line the Shore’s coastline and clifftops, and many are protected either by their size or by the coastal rules that apply along the edge. Getting the status checked before the saw comes out matters more here than almost anywhere else in Auckland.

Old shelter belts and their stumps
Glenfield, Albany, Greenhithe and Silverdale were farmland within living memory, and the macrocarpa and pine shelter belts are still there — now oversized, often dying, and surrounded by houses. Taking them out usually leaves large stumps, which is why stump work is so much of what we do on the Shore.

Crown thinning, reduction and deadwooding by Level 4 certified arborists. On the Shore this is often about wind loading and rebalancing a tree that has grown away from the coast.

Stump grinding
Ground out below ground level so the space is ready to turf, pave or replant. Compact machines fit through a standard gate, which matters on the Shore’s tighter sections.

When the roots genuinely have to come out — for a foundation, a driveway or a retaining wall — we excavate rather than grind. We’ll tell you on site which one your job actually needs.

What Shore property owners ask us most.
Yes — from Devonport and Northcote at the lower harbour, through Glenfield, Takapuna, Albany and the East Coast Bays, and up to Silverdale, Orewa and Whangaparāoa. If your suburb is not named on this page, call and ask; it is almost certainly still within our normal radius.
Often not without consent. Many pōhutukawa along the Shore’s coastline are protected, either individually or through the rules that apply near the coastal edge, and the penalties for removing a protected tree are serious. We check the status as part of the free site visit and tell you what is and is not allowed before anything is booked. Pruning is frequently possible where removal is not.
Grinding is cheaper, faster and enough for most jobs — the stump is taken below ground level and the area can be turfed, paved or replanted. Full excavation is only needed when the roots themselves are the problem, such as under a driveway, a foundation or a retaining wall. On an old shelter belt stump we will tell you on site which one the job actually needs rather than defaulting to the more expensive answer.
Usually, yes. We use compact machines that fit through a standard gateway, which covers most Shore sections including the older villa properties around Devonport and Takapuna. Where there is genuinely no access, the stump can be taken down by hand instead — slower, but it still gets done.
Not necessarily. A tree shaped by years of coastal wind is normal, and a lean it has grown into is very different from one that has developed suddenly. What matters is the root plate, the soil around it and how much sail the crown is carrying. A crown reduction often solves the wind loading without losing the tree.
