Local Conditions

Why North Shore Trees Need Different Care

The Shore sits between two coasts, and it shows in the trees. Salt-laden wind, thin coastal soils and decades-old shelter planting all create problems you see far less of inland.

  • Arborist sectioning down a wind-damaged tree on a coastal North Shore section

    Salt wind and exposure

Anything on an exposed face from Devonport up through the East Coast Bays takes constant salt-laden wind. It burns foliage on the seaward side, pushes growth inland and leaves trees lopsided and top-heavy — which is exactly what fails in a storm.

  • Arborist pruning a mature coastal tree above a North Shore property

    Protected coastal natives

Pōhutukawa line the Shore’s coastline and clifftops, and many are protected either by their size or by the coastal rules that apply along the edge. Getting the status checked before the saw comes out matters more here than almost anywhere else in Auckland.

  • Stump grinder clearing an old shelter belt stump on a North Shore property

Old shelter belts and their stumps

Glenfield, Albany, Greenhithe and Silverdale were farmland within living memory, and the macrocarpa and pine shelter belts are still there — now oversized, often dying, and surrounded by houses. Taking them out usually leaves large stumps, which is why stump work is so much of what we do on the Shore.

What We Do Here

Tree Services Across the North Shore

We work with homeowners, property managers and body corporates from Northcote to Orewa, on everything from a single overgrown hedge to a shelter belt that has outgrown the section.

  • Tree removal

Sectioned down and rigged out where there is no machinery access — the usual situation on a narrow coastal section or a steep bank. Protected status checked before we quote.

  • Tree pruning and reduction

Crown thinning, reduction and deadwooding by Level 4 certified arborists. On the Shore this is often about wind loading and rebalancing a tree that has grown away from the coast.

  • Stump grinding

Ground out below ground level so the space is ready to turf, pave or replant. Compact machines fit through a standard gate, which matters on the Shore’s tighter sections.

  • Full stump and root removal

When the roots genuinely have to come out — for a foundation, a driveway or a retaining wall — we excavate rather than grind. We’ll tell you on site which one your job actually needs.

  • Hedge trimming and removal

Shaping, height reduction and full removal, including the tall boundary hedges that separate so many Shore sections. Clippings and green waste taken away.

  • 24/7 emergency and storm work

Trees down, split or leaning after a storm are attended urgently. Exposed coastal sites are usually the first to be hit and the first we get called to.

Also available on the North Shore

Palm tree removal, tree felling where there is room to drop a tree whole, landscaping to restore the space once the heavy work is done, and commercial tree services for body corporates, schools and managed properties.

How It Works

What Happens When You Call Us

The same four steps on every North Shore job, whether it is one hedge or a whole shelter belt.

  1. 1

    Free site visit

We come to the property, look at the tree and the access, and talk through what you actually want from the space.

  2. 2

    Protection check

Before quoting we check whether the tree is protected by size, by a scheduled listing or by the coastal rules. You find out before the work is booked, not after.

  3. 3

    Written quote

A fixed written price with the scope spelled out — what comes down, what gets taken away, and what is left behind.

  4. 4

    The work, and the clean-up

Certified, fully insured arborists with a JSA on site. Green waste removed and the site left tidy, which is the part people actually remember.
