Large Macrocarpa Pruned Back Off a House to Cut Storm Risk in Oratia

A 16-metre macrocarpa had heavy limbs stretched over the roof, garage and driveway of an exposed Oratia bush section — lifted, deadwooded and reduced in a day, so the weight came off before the next westerly without losing the shelter it provides.

The Background

What We Were Called To

The situation

A homeowner on a bush section in Oratia called us about a big macrocarpa close to the house. After a few stormy winters they had already had branches come down, and the tree’s limbs now reached right out over the roof and the garage. They did not want to lose the tree — it gives them shelter and privacy from the road — but they wanted the risk over the house sorted before the next big westerly.

The problem

The macrocarpa was about 16 metres tall, with heavy limbs stretching out over the roof, the garage and the driveway. There was dead wood through the canopy, and the lower branches hung low over the house. On an exposed West Auckland section that catches the westerlies head-on, those long overhanging limbs were the main worry — a heavy branch coming down in a storm could do real damage.

What we decided

This was a pruning job, not a removal — the tree was healthy and worth keeping. Our Level 4 arborist set a clear plan: lift the crown to raise the canopy off the roof and garage, take out all the dead wood, and carefully shorten the longest limbs hanging over the house to take the weight off them and cut the storm risk. All of it done with proper cuts so the tree stays healthy — no topping, which would only make it weaker and messier.

How It Ran

The Work, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Assessment

Our Level 4 arborist checked the dead wood through the canopy and which limbs actually carried risk over the roof, garage and driveway.

  2. 2

    Prune, not remove

The tree was healthy and providing shelter and privacy, so the plan was to take the risk out of it rather than take it down.

  3. 3

    Dead wood out

The climber worked through the canopy on harness and rope, clearing the dead wood first.

  4. 4

    Crown lifted

The lower branches were raised off the roofline and clear of the garage and driveway.

  5. 5

    Long limbs reduced

The heaviest limbs reaching over the house were shortened back to good growth points, taking the weight out of them before the next westerly.

  6. 6

    Roped down and chipped

On a tight bush section the bigger pieces were roped down clear of the roof and garage rather than dropped, then chipped as we went.

The Outcome

The Result

The tree was lifted well clear of the house, garage and driveway, the dead wood was gone, and the long limbs over the roof were reduced so there is far less weight to come down in a storm. The macrocarpa was left healthy and still doing its job as shelter and privacy — just safer, lighter and tidier. We chipped the brush, cleared the site, and left it clean.

Homes and businesses

This was a home job, but we prune the same way everywhere — schools, offices, body corporates and public spaces across Auckland. The goal is always the same: keep the tree healthy, take the risk out of it, and shape it properly rather than just cutting it back hard.
