Overgrown Oak Pruned to Bring Light Back to a Manurewa Backyard
A dense oak had thrown a Manurewa backyard into shade and was dropping dead wood onto the lawn — thinned, lifted and deadwooded in half a day, so the light came back and the yard was safe for the kids again.

What We Were Called To
The situation
A family in Manurewa called us about a big oak in their backyard. Over the years it had grown thick and heavy, throwing the whole yard and the back of the house into shade. Branches were hanging over the roof and gutters, and dead pieces had started dropping onto the lawn where the kids play. They loved the tree and wanted to keep it; they just needed it made safer, tidier and less shady.
The problem
The oak was about 12 metres tall with a dense, overgrown crown. Too many branches meant very little light and air got through, the lower limbs hung low over the roof, and there was dead wood through the canopy that could fall at any time. This was a pruning job, not a removal — the tree was healthy, it had just been left too long without care.
What we decided
Our Level 4 arborist looked at the tree and put together a simple plan: thin out the crown to let light and wind through, lift the lower branches up off the roof, take out all the dead wood, and shorten back a couple of over-long limbs. All of it done with proper pruning cuts to keep the tree healthy; no topping or hacking, which only damages a tree and makes it grow back worse.

Assessment
Our Level 4 arborist read the crown, found the dead wood and worked out how much could come out without stressing the tree.

Simple plan
Thin the crown, lift the lower branches off the roof, remove every dead limb and shorten a couple of over-long ones.

Crown thinned
The climber made careful, selective cuts through the inner branches so light and wind could move through the canopy again.

The lower limbs were raised off the roofline and gutters, which also opened the yard up underneath.

Every dead limb was removed, which is what had been dropping onto the lawn where the children play.

Branches went straight through the chipper, the lawn was raked and the yard was left clean.
The Outcome
The Result
The backyard got its light back, and a lot more of it reached the house. The roof and gutters were clear, the dead wood was gone so the lawn was safe for the kids again, and the oak was left healthy, balanced and well shaped. Pruned properly like this, it will put on strong new growth and stay in good condition for years. We raked and chipped everything and left the yard clean.

About This Job
As a rule, no more than about a quarter of the live crown in one visit. Beyond that a tree puts its energy into panicked regrowth rather than sealing the cuts. This oak needed thinning and lifting, not volume removed.
Topping leaves large open wounds and forces weak, crowded regrowth that is more likely to fail later. It makes a tree less safe, not more. Proper reduction cuts back to a growth point do the same job without the damage.
Not always, but over a lawn, a driveway or a roof it is, because it will eventually come down on its own and you do not get to choose when. Deadwooding removes that without touching the healthy structure.
