Completed Project

Coastal Pōhutukawa Pruned to Reopen a Harbour View at a Bucklands Beach Home

A mature pōhutukawa had grown across a Bucklands Beach family’s harbour view and over their deck — reduced, thinned and lifted within the council rules, so the view and the afternoon light came back without the tree looking cut about.

The Background

What We Were Called To

The situation

A family in Bucklands Beach called us about the big pōhutukawa in their front garden. It is a beautiful old tree and they wanted to keep it, but over the years it had grown up and out until it blocked most of their harbour view and hung right over the deck and roof. Leaves were filling the gutters and the deck sat in shade for most of the afternoon. They wanted the view and the light back — without harming the tree.

The problem

The pōhutukawa was around 10 metres tall and just as wide, with the dense, spreading crown you get on an older coastal tree. The top and the seaward side had grown across the view, and the lower branches hung low over the deck and roofline. Pōhutukawa are tough, much-loved natives, and this one was healthy — so the job was to prune it carefully, not cut it back hard.

What we decided

Because pōhutukawa are often protected in Auckland, we first checked the council rules for the tree and confirmed what pruning was allowed. Our Level 4 arborist then set a light-handed plan: a careful crown reduction on the seaward side to reopen the view, some thinning to let more light and wind through, and a crown lift to raise the canopy off the deck and roof — all with proper cuts that suit a native and keep it healthy.

How It Ran

The Work, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Council rules checked

Pōhutukawa are often protected in Auckland, so the tree’s status was confirmed and the permitted pruning agreed before a single cut was made.

  2. 2

    Light-handed plan

A careful reduction on the seaward side to reopen the view, thinning to let light and wind through, and a crown lift off the deck and roof.

  3. 3

    Selective cuts

The climber moved through the tree on harness and rope, cutting by hand and with a chainsaw, taking a little at a time.

  4. 4

    Shape checked as we went

We stepped back repeatedly to read the shape and the view, keeping the reduction gentle and even so the tree still looked natural rather than chopped.

  5. 5

    Crown lifted

The lower branches were raised clear of the deck and roofline, so the gutters stay clear and the afternoon sun reaches the deck.

  6. 6

    Clean-up

The ground crew roped the larger pieces down clear of the deck, chipped the brush and left the garden spotless.

The Outcome

The Result

The family got their harbour view back and a lot more afternoon light onto the deck. The gutters were clear, the canopy sat well above the roof, and the pōhutukawa was left healthy, balanced and looking like it had barely been touched — just smaller and tidier. Pruned gently like this, a coastal native will stay strong and hold its shape for years. We cleaned up completely and left the garden spotless.

Homes and businesses

This was a home job, but we prune the same way everywhere — schools, offices, body corporates and public spaces across Auckland, including protected and native trees, which we always handle correctly and within the council rules.
