A published Auckland guide lists NZ$100–$400 for small-scale hedge or shrub removal, but that is not a reliable allowance for a complete boundary hedge with roots removed. Larger hedge removal needs a site-specific quote covering length, height, access, root work and disposal.

The small-job figure comes from Auckland Palm Tree Removal’s cost guide. It does not define a hedge length or confirm root removal and GST for that line. Treat it as a limited starting reference, not A One A Tree Care’s price or a national average.

For a meaningful hedge removal cost, describe the finish you need. Cutting vegetation to ground level, removing the woody stumps and leaving a strip ready for a new fence are different scopes. Comparing those jobs using one headline number can hide the largest part of the work.

Hedge Removal vs Trimming: Cost Comparison

Trimming maintains a hedge that you intend to keep. Removal clears the plants and requires a decision about what remains below ground. If the problem is simply excess height or width, request an assessment of whether suitable pruning can retain the screening you value.

For comparison, Tree Removal Auckland publishes trimming bands of $150–$350 for low hedges, $300–$700 for standard boundary hedges and $700–$2,000+ for tall or long runs, including GST. The same source quotes removal individually. These maintenance figures must not be relabelled as removal prices.

Read our hedge trimming cost guide for New Zealand if you are deciding between the two services. A trimming option should state the proposed final height and width; a vague “cut back” does not tell you whether the result will solve the problem.

Removal may also introduce costs outside the tree work. If the hedge provides privacy, include replacement planting or fencing in your planning. Saving on future trimming is only one part of the decision when the cleared boundary needs another form of screening.

Think about the timing of that replacement. If children or pets rely on the existing boundary, arrange how the area will be secured between removal and the next installation. A temporary measure may need its own allowance, and the two contractors should understand the sequence before dates are agreed.

Root Removal: The Cost That Is Easy to Miss

A hedge is often a line of individual plants, each with a woody base. Make sure the quote identifies whether those bases remain. A neat cut at ground level can look finished while still leaving obstructions where fence posts, paving or new plants are intended.

The next use determines the appropriate treatment: leaving the bases, grinding selected stumps or excavating the required root material. Avoid requesting “all roots removed” without discussing what that means near paths, pipes and neighbouring plants. Define the necessary clearance and finish with the person doing the next stage.

Before below-ground work, identify known services and tell the contractor about irrigation, lighting cables and drainage along the hedge. The working method needs to account for those features. A narrow planting strip beside paving is different from an accessible open bed.

The treatment of remaining material also affects the finished result. Are grindings removed, retained or spread? Is imported soil included? Will the area be levelled, and who prepares it for planting or construction? Those questions make root work a visible part of the price rather than an assumption.

For illustration, a homeowner replacing a hedge with a fence should share the planned fence line and discuss post locations before removal. This does not set a price; it helps the removal contractor and fence installer agree who clears the places that matter.

How Hedge Length and Height Affect the Quote

Measure the hedge’s approximate length and note its height and width. Photographs from both ends help show slopes and changes along the run. The table below is a quote-planning tool, not a set of invented per-metre prices.

Hedge description Pricing evidence or basis Specify before quoting
One or a few small shrubs or a limited hedge removal Published small-job reference: $100–$400; dimensions, GST and roots unspecified Plant count and whether below-ground work is required
Short, low hedge run Site-specific project price Measured length, width, woody bases and waste removal
Longer boundary hedge Site-specific project price Total length, access on each side and replacement plans
Tall, dense hedge or shelterbelt Specialist assessment Height, stem sizes, nearby structures and handling route

A quoted price per metre can help compare similar jobs, but only if it includes the same work. The rate should specify whether it covers cutting alone, root treatment and disposal. A metre of small shrubs and a metre of mature shelterbelt are not interchangeable units.

If the job is hourly, clarify whether the rate is for one person or the whole crew and whether equipment is additional. Request an estimated total and a process for agreeing extra work. Do not assume the rate for routine hedge trimming covers removal machinery.

For a boundary hedge, confirm ownership, permission to remove it and any access arrangements before booking. If the boundary or responsibility is disputed, resolve that first. Paying a contractor does not establish permission to remove someone else’s plants.

To control the budget, have the entire run assessed together, separate removal from replacement costs and agree the waste destination. Where there is a useful destination for suitable chips, a retention option can be compared with cartage.

Keep the accepted quote and a marked photograph of the hedge together. If only part of the run is being removed, identify the stopping point clearly. Agree how the remaining plants and nearby garden features will be treated, and review the scope again if you change the replacement plan. A precise instruction is particularly useful where several similar hedges meet at a corner.

Photograph existing fence damage before work so the starting condition is recorded for both parties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hedge removal priced per metre?

It can be presented that way, but compare the full scope and total. Roots, height and access can change the work significantly. No dependable Auckland full-removal rate per metre was established for this guide, so a tailored quote is the appropriate next step.

Will the hedge grow back if it is only cut down?

That depends on the species and treatment. A cutting-only scope should explain how regrowth will be managed. Do not assume every hedge dies when its visible stems are removed, or that every job requires the same root treatment.

Can I plant a new hedge immediately?

Old root material, ground condition and the reason for removing the original hedge may affect replanting. Agree soil preparation and plant selection as a separate scope if needed. A cleared strip is not automatically a prepared planting bed.

Does hedge removal include taking everything away?

Only when the quote says so. Confirm branches, woody stems, root material and any unrelated rubbish separately. Also agree whether the final surface is simply cleared, roughly levelled or prepared for the next contractor.
